go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

I just reinstalled XP Home Edition...

I had bought a new Maxtor HD 160 gig with 8mb cache ata/133 so I could put my recording software on this hard drive and save massive .wav files and compressed .mp3's onto my computer and I need to make sure it's safe from intruders ;)

    Thanks for the help.

Restart Hijack this and put a check mark against the following

    O4 - Global Startup: Reboot.exe

    Click Fix Checked

There are no obvious signs of MS blast, Have you run all the necessary critical updates?

Follow the instructions here to do further checks and updates if necessary

you might want to turn off System restore, Update your anti virus and do a full scan to double check

If you haven't got an antivirus which i must admit I can't see in start up, you can get a free one from AVG

I just do this like once a month:

    1) Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> delete cookies, delete files (select off-line content), clear history. Then click ok and exit Internet Explorer.

    2) Read http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html then download and run SpyBot. Make sure to get the updates for SpyBot before you have it scan your computer. After you scan and remove anything SpyBot finds, make sure to click the Immunize button and OK and then click the Immunize button in the right pane.

    3) Update and run your Anti-Virus program (NAV or MacAfee), if you don't have an Anti-Virus program installed on your PC use one of the free ones here:

You'll get varied answers on that one :p

I'm behind a router, so I don't use a firewall. I hate how the virus scanners slow my system down, so I don't have one running at all times.............instead I have a download folder that I send things to and scan that when I feel like seeing what I've been sent :)

I knew I would get varied answers on that one, thats why I asked ;) But thanks for the lookout. Yeah a router would be nice to setup on my house considering we have 3 computers. But only 56k it doesn't matter anyway at the moment because the other two arn't hooked up at the moment.

This area doesn't offer high speed access only if you can afford frame relay or T-1

I use Norton System Works, with Spybot search and Destroy and With Sygate Personal Firewall. The only firewall on record to date that hadn't been hacked thru or lets trojans in. And the free personal firewall is free to use for life, and you can register it, and they do update if for you automatically. And there is five different scans that you can run on it , including one for trojans, and one for ports, and one for sheilds. And it is the only firewall that I have found to date that keeps your system in full stealth mode. :)
Just go to www.sygate.com And take a look around for yourself, dont just take my word on it.
