If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, go into Control Panel - User Accounts, then turn off the user account control(UAC) feature, then restart your computer.

Besides this feature being annoying, it prevents HiJackThis from working properly in some computers.

Is this computer the Compaq Presario F761US laptop that's listed in your "computer specifications"?

You haven't replied to post #4.

Are we dealing with the same computer?

Did you turn off UAC and then restart your computer and then try to run a scan with HiJackThis?
