Hi guys, thank you in advance for helping me!

I very recently got rid of a LOAD of spyware using the very handy MalwareBytes, but after running a scan with Spyware Doctor, it appears I still have Zbot which I can't get rid of.

After doing some research, I found that this particular trojan liked to hide from HijackThis, so I renamed the .exe file before running the scan. I also created an uninstall log to be looked at, so you will find both the scan log and the uninstall log in this post.

Thank you very very much for any help - I've only had this laptop for three days, so you can imagine how rattled I am right now.

Thanks :D x

I posted something similar to this last night, but since nobody was kind enough to actually look at the file, I'll just repost it...

Last night, I removed a LOT of spyware and malware from my computer, but according to Spyware Doctor, one is still left behind that I can't get rid of - Zbot.

I've done my research and it says that Zbot is quite well at hiding from HijackThis, so I renamed the .exe file and ran a scan. Not only that, but I also exported an uninstall list upon renaming.

Below is my HijackThis log and uninstall list attached, I just hope someone will be more willing to listen to me...

Thanks.

This is the 3rd time I've had to repost this because nobody will help me, maybe this is the third time lucky?

I have only had this laptop for six days and already it is plagued by malware.

I managed to get rid of the main problem, but as it was described as 'backdoor', it's let a lot more in. I managed to get rid of those as well, but one still remains - Zbot.

Zbot is also described as backdoor so it keeps letting things in.

Zbot is only detected by Spyware Doctor, but it is unable to get rid of it. It went undetected in Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and another one which I can't remember.

The problem's gotten so bad that I'm unable to use Internet Explorer (I use Firefox, but I can't even use IE for online scans where I MUST use IE) and everytime I open my Hotmail account with Firefox, it closes itself (Zbot specializes in obtaining password). Also, everytime I do a new scan, there's several spyware there.

Please, you're my only hope. I beg of you, help me out here. Like I said, I've only had this laptop for less than a week, I don't want anything to happen to it so soon.

Below is my very recent HijackThis log and uninstall log.

Thanks for your help (if you're kind enough to offer it). x

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Run HJT again, Right click and Run as Administrator, put a check in the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ksjf93orkekfniw73nfdd] C:\Users\Natalie\AppData\Local\Temp\winlogen.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ksjf93orkekfniw73nfdd] C:\Users\Natalie\AppData\Local\Temp\winlogen.exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Right click and Run as AdministratorOTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Copy the lines in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Users\Natalie\AppData\Local\Temp\winlogen.exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Custom List Of Files/Patterns To Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Your Java is out of date.

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Thanks for the reply, I was going crazy with worry here.

Here is what the log says:

File/Folder C:\Users\Natalie\AppData\Local\Temp\winlogen.exe not found.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.3 log created on 09292008_210907

That's a good thing, eh?

Yes, that is good.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate download link 1 alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
