On my learning curve at reading this, I suspect C:\windows\system32\tfswctrl.exe.

This is comment ONLY.Await a check by a Tech.

Not a virus ... from SysInfo:

    [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe ...

Drive letter access to HP's and Veritas' version of DirectCD. Does the same thing as DirectCD. From HP - "This is a needed file as it controles the readability of the Combo drives. Without this file loading the end user will be able to burn CD's but wont be able to read them. The drive itself will be able to read store bought master Cd's without the file but not burnt ones"

I see nothing malicious in your HJT log ... but here's a couple of possibilities regarding resource hogs:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPClient.exe" -l

    = IPInSightLAN 01

    According to SysInfo:

Installed with Verizon DSL accounts. IP Insight is a Quality of Service monitor and diagnostic tool that isn't required - see here for more information. This one constantly "phones home" and wastes resource - hence the "X" status

    O4 - Global Startup: hp center UI.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar.exe

ShadowBar is the User Interface for the HP Center, and is not required to run at startup.

    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

The Backweb startup item, according to HP's site: http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/12oct01a.htm

"With the My HP Center, consumers have access directly from the desktop to Internet sites featuring special offers for HP customers ranging from personal finance and shopping to digital imaging and music".

Ok then, what should I do about this? I do burn cd's occasionally so should I try to repair this file or is it not needed? and what do I need to do to solve the problem I am having with my pc running slow?

    Thanks for your help!

Have you defragmented your hard disk in a while?

IMO, I would leave the tfswctrl.exe file alone ... it should be allowed to launch when you start your computer.

As for the IPClient item: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1247

Perhaps that would be worth "fixing".

Angie, Dont delete the System32\tfswctrl.exe file because as Winchester 73 explained-its NEEDED to permit reading of CDs.
If you are unsure how to correct the other points, await advice from another Tech.
Do you clean the junk out of your PC regularly?

This could be one of those trial and error things.

Let me make a suggestion ... first, re-download HJT and put it somewhere other than in a temporary directory ... HJT will not make backups that are useable unless you have it elsewhere.

HJT makes backups by default, and "fixing" an O4 entry doesn't remove the program from your computer, it only prevents it from running upon start-up ...

So, for example, you could "fix" the IPClient item, re-boot, and see if you notice any difference ... you could always restore the HJT backup. Likewise the two HP Center items.

well when I re-download hijackthis it will not let me save it anywhere except in temp directory...any idea why or what I am doing wrong? it doesn't give me an error message..just doesn't do anything when I click "save" no matter where I try to save it to... ?????!!!!!!

Angie,BTW while you wait.I know that you have run Spybot & Adaware...have you checked that they are both fully updated?

dvk01 gives standardised advice on this & CWS in the Brown Tiger post(Page2 on this forum) [email protected]

    Worth checking.
