Long story short: downloaded program, installed, computer locked up solid, after 40 mins was able to uninstall and return to operational status...ran HijackThis after scanning from here to Sunday.....I see things that weren't there before. What's that yahoo thing and should it be there?

Hello onlykims.
This is what I suggest you do first.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot and Ad-aware. All are free and available bellow.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:
Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Config> Misc Tools> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature. Remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Post a new HijackThis log.

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"


Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin


Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Before I post this new log, let me tell ya! That wasn't all that easy to do and it should have been. The computer threw some error about ntoskrnl being corrupt when going into safe mode, then it disappeared just as fast and rebooted again. Second attempt got me in without any more errors. There was also a flash of a dll not being able to initialize, but I didn't catch it before the computer rebooted - I had just turned off system restore at that point. Anyway.....

AH! OMG! OH NO! Panic mode.....OK, rebooted, hit F8, keyboard error, can't type password, reboot, F8 again, keyboard error again, again can't type password. Turned computer off. Checked connections. Turned back on....my account is gone! It went to Administrator, which I've never logged in as. I didn't install this machine. It's a Dell. I've tried to find my files even, and I can't find anything. I've turned it off and am going to try again....

Oh, shoot, forgot, when I originally turned it back on, my account was there, but when I typed my password it told me that I was locked out - there are no settings on this one to lock me out!!! Administrator was the only one that came up and it accepted my password for my original account that's not showing up

The info has to still be there because I can still access the shared files from my networked pc (unfortunately, I didn't give myself full access both ways on the network, so I don't have any further access to my pc)

:eek: OK, TG for tech support. Reset factory settings and all is happy again. I can again get into my account. Any ideas at all what happened there? I'm a network admin, so I can understand. :) How can I prevent that from happening? Maybe the shock will wear off soon and I'll start thinking again.
