Hi all. I just ran HJT for the first time today and I'm a little confused on which of the files I should fix.

I've been trying to get rid of all this spyware on my computer for the last few months with no success. It's actually at it's worst point right now being that I can't use my browser for more than 5 minutes without getting at least 4 to 5 pop-ups... These pop-ups are now sending me back to my desktop/browser while I'm trying to play online FPS games, which is not a good thing.

Anyways, here's some of the programs I've tried out: Adware, CWshredder, Spyhunter, (which I had to shell out $30.00 for), McAfee's AntiVirus scan and Firewall protection ($35.00).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

SpyHunter is a bogus program and you should get rid of it. It's a shame you paid for it.

    Download the LPS Fix.

    http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

Check all instances of lspak.dll (and nothing else) , and move them to the "Remove" pane.
    Then click Finish.

Now start your computer in Safe Mode and delete:

    The C:\windows\system32\ lspak.dll file

    Then download and run:

    SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

    http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems''. Anything that needs to be fixed it will show in red and have a green check in the box to the left. Click ''Fix Selected Problems'', Then restart your computer.

Then, after rebooting, please post another log and we’ll see what’s left to get rid of.

Turn off system restore. On the desktop, right-click on My Computer, click properties, click system restore tab, check turn off system restore, click apply and then OK. Restart your computer. Once your system is clean you will turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked”.

Then boot to safe mode (see how below), locate and delete these files and/or folders:

C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp - open folder and delete entire contents
    C:\installer\id53.exe - folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\iqbdvn.exe - file
    C:\WINDOWS\Config\wmsvb.exe - file
    C:\WINDOWS\bxxs5.dll - file
    C:\Program Files\TV Media - folder

How to restart to safe mode:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start - Search and under "More advanced search options". Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools - Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

IMPORTANT!: You should go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs". This will patch numerous security holes in IE and Windows. Otherwise, you are leaving your computer open and vulnerable.

Then reboot and post another log please.

There are still some problems but I also see that you have some entries unchecked in msconfig so they don't start up. Please check them all so that we can see if there is anything bad in there. You can uncheck them again later.

    Then post another log please.

Open up Task Manager - Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task on the following process. If it won't allow you to then do it in safe mode:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe

Then rescan with Hijack This and have it fix these entries:

    O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {60112085-E1CE-4e0e-823A-EBB1AD98804C} - C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp\bvsmw.dat

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wmsvb] C:\WINDOWS\Config\wmsvb.exe

In safe mode, locate and delete:

C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALSETTINGS\Temp - open folder and delete entire contents
    C:\WINDOWS\Config\wmsvb.exe - file

Then reboot and post another log please.

Although I was able to locate the cvss.exe file by running a search, it was not listed as one of the running processes so I just left that alone and went to the next step.
I fixed the 2 entries you listed with HJT, and then deleted the entire contents of that Temp folder. I had no luck located the wmsvb file. The only file in that Windows Config folder was a bvsmw.ini file.

    Here's the next log:

I would delete that file: bvsmw.ini (it's wmsvb spelled backwards).

The log looks good. How's everything running?

You still need to get Service Pack 1 and the Microsoft critical updates.

Now you can turn system restore back on and create a new restore point:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/kimsey1.mspx

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD, for added protection.

Things have been running great since we started ~ Thank You :)

Any idea why I'm now seeing a lot of "greyed out" icons. There's around 10 on my desktop alone named AlbumArt (small and large) .jpg files, Folder.jpg, desktop.ini, and Thumbs.db. I also notice a lot more greyed out icons in the C:\ drive and Program Files, Documents and Settings, etc.. ?

The Service Pack and updates I only wish I could get... I've tried. Turns out the dealer where I bought this system used an invalid version of XP and I'm not allowed to DL any updates for it :( As my luck would have it, the dealer is no longer in business and I'm hoping to planning on purchasing a new system within' a few months with a valid XP OS.

Hi, Just as info--you may be able to get a valid key from Microsoft:

You do have to call but it should be toll free:

    http://www.mikeshardware.com/reports/report_winactprob.html

The message may say your key was invalid, but it may not acutally be....if it is they will know but still may give you another valid key.
There is always a way to obtain a valid key with help from Microsoft.
Next, I want you to bookmark well this site--I bet you will use it after you look through it!

    http://www.rselby.com/winxp.htm

That is a help page par excellence....

Those would be system files that we unhid. You can go back and reverse the steps to hide them if you wish.

    I'm glad everything's running fine.

    :)
