    Hello,

Recently, my computer seems to be taking a long time to startup. More recently, the CPU usage seems to spike up to at/near 100% and stay there for extended periods for no readily apparent reason. I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look at this HJT log and see if you see any problems. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've got 515444K of Physical Memory and 159084 of Available Memory. Is that what you were looking for?

Yes. So physically you have about 503MB.
256MB is minimum for XP, and 512MB would be satisfactory.
But you also have a lot running. I think you'd benefit from more memory.

You have two processes "cidaemon.exe" and "cisvc.exe" (which are related), that are a hard drive content indexing and cataloging service that may be slowing your computer.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899869

To see if they are causing the problem open TaskManager so you can see your CPU usage at 90-100%. Then open a command window and type the following two commands:
    taskkill /f /im cisvc.exe
    taskkill /f /im cidaemon.exe

This will temporarily kill them (without deleting anything). Does CPU usage drop dramatically?

There are a lot of unnecessary programs that are loading during startup and running in the background. That in itself will slow down most any computer. I see a minimum of 14 of them that can be disabled from doing so.

    IgfxTray
    HotKeysCmds
    UpdateManager
    DVDLauncher
    Acrobat Assistant 7.0
    ISUSPM Startup
    ISUSScheduler
    SunJavaUpdateSched
    QuickTime Task
    iTunesHelper
    swg
    Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher
    Adobe Reader Speed Launch
    QuickBooks Update Agent

Sorry to be dense, but how do I go about disabling the programs mentioned in the previous messages? (I guess that's why it says "beginner" under my name...).

Thanks again for all your help,

There are a couple of ways to stop the programs that I suspect are causing your CPU usage problem:

First, open Task Manager so you can see your CPU usage at 90-100%. (Right click the bar at the bottom of your screen to do this, and then left click Task Manager). CPU usage is at the bottom of the window.

Then open a command window (click Start, Run, then type: cmd, then hit enter) and type the following two commands followed by hitting enter after each one:
    taskkill /f /im cisvc.exe
    taskkill /f /im cidaemon.exe

This will temporarily kill them (without deleting anything). Does CPU usage shown in Task Manager drop dramatically?

Alernatively, you can open Task Manager, click the "Processes" tab, highlight "cisvc.exe", right click it, then left click "End Process" (answer "Yes"). Do the same for 'cidaemon.exe".

To disable the ones referenced by flavallee, do

Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup Tab
    and UNselect the ones noted.

Concerning reply #7, do the following:

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK.

A window will open with a long list of startup entries. Every entry that has a checkmark next to it is loading during startup and running in the background.

Remove the checkmark from the 14 entries that I listed, then click Apply - OK - Restart.

During restart, a small SCU window will appear. Ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it and then click OK.

Run a new scan with HijackThis and then post that new log here.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to research any of the entries in your startup list, make use of this site:

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?type=&filter=&count=100&offset=0

By typing in an entry and then clicking the "Search" button, it'll tell you what the entry is and whether you can uncheck and disable it.

You'll likely discover that there are other entries that you can disable, depending on how you use your computer and what peripherals are connected to it.
