    Hello,

My computer will very rarely go into standby mode. If I close the laptop without shutting down, the computer gets stuck on the screen "Preparing to go into standby"; when I open the laptop again, I have to hold the power button down to turn it off and then start it back up again. If I let the screen saver go for long enough, the computer locks up on a black screen and the same recourse is necessary. The problem started in April and was intermittent; the computer would sometimes not go into standby when I closed the laptop. Now it never does when I shut the laptop and sometimes hangs up when the laptop is still open and computer tries to go into standby after I don't touch it for a while. No new software has been installed. I have tried to use Registry Mechanic to fix the problem, but only installed this after this started happening.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has any ideas what could be going on - I'm at a complete loss! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

There are lots of causes on this standby problem and here is one of the fixes for it.

This is a problem that may occur in Windows XP if your ATAPI (Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface) hard drive has a capacity of more than 137GB. When your computer enters Standby or Hibernation mode, the drive can become corrupted.

Microsoft has released a patch that prevents hard drive corruption from occurring when your computer enters Standby or Hibernation mode. First, make sure that you have installed WinXP SP2 (Service Pack 2). Then go to support.mi crosoft.com/search and type KB331958 in the For field. Click Search. From the list of search results, click Hard Disk May Become Corrupted When Entering Standby Or Hibernation Or When Writing A Memory Dump. On the resulting page, click Download The Q331958 WXP SP2 x86 ENU.exe Package Now link under the Hotfix Information section. On the resulting page, click the Download button. When prompted, choose to save the 394KB file on your hard drive. After you download the file (Q331958_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe), double-click it to launch the installer. After you install the file, restart your computer.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded the file, but when I try to run it, I get an error message stating that "You can only install this update on a computer with no Service Packs installed".

    Hi devil_himself,

Thanks for your message. I looked there last night after you posted this link to my previous thread, but I don't see anything in that list that looks like my problem.

Download Bootvis.exe and optimize the power management and bootup times.
After running the utility, choose Trace > "Optimize System".

    Restart.

    ------------------
Also try running the file checker
Go To RUn >> Start >> sfc /scannow

    ---------------------------------------
Also check the event viewer for errors
    Start >> run >> eventvwr.msc
