Hi, can anyone help me? This is the scenario. I inadvertently got Hotbar when I downloaded a picture for my desktop. My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400, Windows XP OS. After I uninstalled Hotbar, I could not connect to Yahoo Messenger. Everything else works fine, because I can go to my homepage at Yahoo, read my Yahoo e-mail, browse the internet, etc. The only thing that may not be working correctly besides Yahoo Messenger is that my daughter could not connect to her Hotmail account. I uninstalled Yahoo Messenger, downloaded it again and re-installed it, but it still would not let me connect. I then ran two System Restores to get back to a point when Yahoo Messenger was working, but no success there either. So I undid the last Restore, uninstalled Yahoo again and then re-downloaded it and re-installed it, still with no success. I then downloaded PC Mighty Max and ran a scan which showed some missing files that I posted on another forum at TSG. The TSG person who answered me suggested I try scannow, which I did, but nothing has changed, and on his advice I downloaded Hijack This! and ran a scan. In the meantime, I found some Hotbar files still lurking in the computer, so I did another uninstall of Hotbar, and now I know that the adware is gone, because when I uninstalled it this last time, I lost the desktop picture that I had initially downloaded. SO, I am posting the logs from Hijack This! that I did just before the last uninstall of Hotbar, and after this last uninstall. Between the logs, I shut down the computer and rebooted. Can someone read these and help me out here? Please give me specific instructions what to do. I am hoping not to have to reformat to get my Yahoo Messenger working again, and I also want to get rid of any other spyware/adware on the computer, after which I am definitely downloading Spybot!!

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide!

By the way, when I say that I can't connect to Yahoo Messenger, what is happening is that when I try to sign in, I get a message that says Yahoo Messenger cannot connect, and it tells me to check that I am online. I have a dial-up connection, and my internet provider tells me that there are no proxies for dial-up, so that's not my problem.

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Reboot.

Download Spybot http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3957.html

Click on "Search For updates" when prompted.

Scan, click on fix problems.

Reboot.

Download AdAware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer and post another HJT log for review.

Hi cybertech. Thank you for your reply. Sorry I had not responded sooner. My father-in-law passed away over the weekend so I have not been online.
I have not followed the above instructions yet, because prior to receiving them, I downloaded Spybot and ran a scan and had it fix the problems it found. Then I went back to my Yahoo Messenger and changed the connection preferences to "no network detection" (which I had previously done several times with no success), and suddenly, I am able to connect to Yahoo Messenger and use it.
So now the question is, do you think I should run another HJT scan and post the log to see if there is anything else on the computer that I should take care of. If you think it's a good idea, I will do so, but won't be able to do it before the end of week because of the funeral. Then maybe I can get the computer cleaned up and can download Adaware as well. Let me know what you think, and I'll follow your instructions.
Thanks again for your help.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your father-in-law. My heart goes to you and family.

Let this be done until you can regain the time and effort to go forward.

I also have known a great loss and it takes time.

Sincerely,
CT

Post a log when you feel up to it, I'll be here.

Thank you, cybertech. I will certainly contact you again in the forums to be sure that everything is fine with my computer. In the meantime, I have the Yahoo Messenger up and running so I can correspond with my grandkids, and that was my main goal.

I appreciate the kind words of condolence, and your thoughtfulness. Only one who has "been there" can appreciate the toll this sort of thing takes, as you obviously know.

I should be caught up on things in the next week or so, so will post a log later.
Again, thanks. Connie
