My Internet Explorer doesnt remember the Homepage I want. For some reason, everytime I reboot I get some stupid search engine homepage. I tried updating Windows Me with the service pack. No good. I tried looking in security in IE and I dont recognize anything that "saves" by default the Home page. I bet while is was websurfing, one website downloaded something and corrupted my IE.

How do get my "changed" homepage locked in and saved?

Hi tcdave

Welcome to TSG! :)

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This and UnZip it Do Not Unzip it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a folder and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

Hi tcdave,

Please go here and download, unzip then run CoolWebShredder.

CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM so just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

Although I can't tie it in specifically to CWS, it does seem to be showing similarities.

Then please post a new log, and we can see what's left, and more importantly, if that cured the problem

Cheers

Liam

Here's a few tips to help prvent this garbage from getting on your machine.

Open Spybot in Advanced mode. Go to Start > Programs > Spybot Search & Destroy > Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click on the "Spybot S&D" button in the left column and under that click on "Immunize. On that page under "Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity" click the "Immunize" button then down below that under "Permanently running bad download blocker for Internet Explorer" click "Install" then right there in the dropdown menu set it to "Block all bad pages silently". Next under that you will see "Recommended miscellaneous protections". Put a check by "Lock IE start page against user changes (current user)".

Finally go here for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.
On this page you will find links to Javacool's SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IE-SPYAD. Get them all and check for updates frequently.
The Immunize feature in Spybot used in conjunction with SpywareBlaster , SpywareGuard, IE-SPYAD and weekly scans with Spybot and Adaware will go a long way toward keeping your PC free of these pests..

Important!: ALWAYS check for updated detections and referencefiles before scanning with Spybot and Adaware and be sure to check for updates to SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard on a weekly basis.
