The best way is through network cards and a switch or hub. Minimum requirements are

1 network (RJ45) connector on each PC. If there is not one built on the motherboard you'll need to add a Network PCI card. ($10.00-$15.00 US$ each)

1 Cat 5 crossover cable. (allows you to connect 2 PCs together without using a switch or hub, however, no more than 2. home switches and hubs can typically network 5 - 24 depending on the number of ports )

Install network cards and configure the network settings to use TCP/IP. If you do not have a router, you'll need to manually configure the IP address.

Without knowing which operating system, it is hard to give you specifics on how to configure these settings. However you might find this site helpful.... http://www.homenethelp.com
