    I've also sadly contracted this virus, and been killing myself trying to find a way to get it out. I've run AVG and the only virus that came up was a "host virus" located at;

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Also, snoopin' around my computer I found a file that the virus created. Its long, very long. So copying and pasting it here would be hellish. If you need to see it, I can be contacted via e-mail; burtonboarder_ (at) hotmail.com

Thank you in Advance for the help.

Mod Edit: I've obfuscated your email address so that SPAM bots won't bury you with junk. :)

    Hi Ro.Shambo

    Welcome to TSG! :)

We have split your post off into your own thread. In the future if you have a Question/Problem please start a "New Thread". It get's too confusing trying to address two different people's problem in the same thread and you may get overlooked.

    Please continue in this thread.

    Please do this:

    * Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    * Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

When trying to run Hijackthis, the virus would close the program, so this is from safe mode. Not sure if that would make a difference or not but it was all I could do. Even when accessing the .txt file, the virus would close notepad.

    * Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [IMG]
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log.

The virus has seemed to accelerate itself. Its now opening pop ups on its own, AND its signing on MSN on its own. It won't let me keep Hijackthis open for long, but if you spam it I still got the log as followed. (Also, was not able to download bitdefender)

Before we do anything else, please open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

    * Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall these:

    IpWins
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    OIN

    * Now go here and install the latest version of Java.

I should mention this also, every once and awhile an install.exe Trojan file appears on my desktop... and it self executes before AVG can delete it.

Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following mirrors.
    • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
    • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
    • Once open, click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
    • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
    • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
    • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
    • A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish
Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

While you're at it, go ahead and do the following too:

    Download HostsXpert from here .
    • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
    • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
    • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program.
    • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

    * Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, click on the "Save Report" button an save the results of the scan to your desktop.

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan
