Also some links arent working on various web pages. Dont know what went wrong. I also cant access any Windows updates. Any thoughts? Thanks.

it's ether your ISP or something has interfered with your settings

    to check do this:

go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

All yopur problems are being causerd by norton internet security,

You need to allow certain sites like hotmail, windoze update etc, in it's preferences. I assume you have it set to high security and privacy options. if the privacy settings are set, it will not send browser referral headings and stops most M$ sites from working

I don't use this over restrictive piece of bloartware, but somewhere in the instructions is information on how to set it up to allow access to hotmail etc

Thanks. I tried to change the settings to Norton and its says that only the supervisor can do that. This is for my home comp and no one accesses it but me. I dont remember setting up any supervisor account when I originally installed it. So then I tried to just uninstall it and it gave me the same message. I just tried something at random and ran a scandisk and defragmenter (which I had never been able to do successfully until reading "Frank's Tips") suddenly hotmail and messenger are working just fine and my comp is running much faster. But on a separate note, is there any other way for me to uninstall Norton, and when I do, what other security/protection software would you recommend? Thanks for your help.

If you're having a problem with uninstalling Norton, you'll need to do it the hard way - deleting its files, folders, and registry entries.

    1. Click - Find - Files And Folders, then delete everything that appears under:

    NORTON

    SYMANTEC

If a file appears that you're not sure about deleting, right-click it, then click Properties. The information on the General and Version tabs will tell you if it's associated with NORTON or SYMANTEC.

    2. Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT, then click OK. Click the + in:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software

Right-click on any NORTON or SYMANTEC folder in the Software sub-menu, then click Delete - Yes.

    3. Once you finish, reboot.
