I have half of a Sony vaio laptop, the in-built screen has been physically damaged. i have been using an external monitor but recently it has blue-screened repeatedly and is also really slow ever since. the message when it blue screens is DRVIER_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL. i want to do a windows reformat and reinstall but the external monitor wont display anything until windows boots up. OS is Windows 7 x86 home premium. anyone got any ideas? thanks

It's either a new laptop screen or a new laptop I'm afraid. Having no display until Windows starts is going to be a severe handicap anyway sooner or later even if you did manage to get Windows up and running again -- you won't be able to see/modify any BIOS settings, select an alternative boot device, or start Windows in Safe Mode when you need to.
