I have a painting that says on a tag on the frame that it is part of a collection. How do I track the origin and worth?
    Here is what it says...
HF8112 "Ellen and Lucy Tracy" Hannah Fairfield America Circa 1839 Windham County, Connecticutt The Peter Tillou Collection

The frame is stamped with a stamp i suppose from a framing shop or Aert Studio, Called Eve Smith Studio Box 2560 Youngstown Ohio 44507

Should I attempt to contact the studio if they are still around?

Anyone have any ideas...I will post a picture of the painting

Here is a picture of it. I am wondering about the family of the subjects in the painting.

    Hi Gabriel :)

Does it have brush strokes? If so, probably not a transfer

I can't really tell, I haven't looked close enough to paintings with brush strokes. It is finely checked (the paint) throughout the painting. It will have to be looked at I think.

Probably would be best to have it examined

Thanks everyone. Since there are lots of prints and canvas transfers out there of this painting, I am sure that's what I have.
But you never know. The place I bought it from was a very affluent part of No. California. I purchased two beaded panels in the same area at a church second hand store for 25 cents, and a Native American collector gave me $250 for them:) .
So if I have a prize piece, I will let you all know.
Thanks Grumb for the site link. :)

Try to find out if the PBS Antiques Road Show is coming to your neck of the woods anytime soon. Here is a map of 2007's shows.

Here is a website of the auction houses they use to appraise antiques on the show:

Look them up for the nearest one to where you live, and schedule an appointment, or call a local art museum for advice in having it appraised.
