    Hi, I have Windows Vista on my laptop, and lately it seems like something is always running in the background. I have a cpu/ram usage meter and it seems to be running a lot. My games are a little bit jerky where they used to run smoothly before.
    I have a program that shows what's running, but I can't tell if some of the programs are supposed to be running or not.

    If I do a HJT would it show what's running?

    Unfortunately, HijackThis is a little outdated when it comes to an operating system newer than Windows XP. It won't show running processes for all users. Howewer, it will show other useful stuff.

    Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

    Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

    The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

    IMPORTANT: Do not "Fix" anything

    For Windows 7 and Vista:

    If Windows is denying access to the Hosts file, disable the UAC and run HijackThis again

    ===================================================================

    How much RAM is on that computer?

    You don't have that much running on that computer. However, McAfee has always been a system resource hog. I would consider a much lighter alternative.

    I would also disable Windows Defender. It's just about useless.

    Is Avira Antivirus as good as McAfee? Also, Mcafee has firewall also. Would I have to get some other firewall?

    Yes, Avira is even better than McAfee. As for the firewall, the built-in Windows Vista firewall is quite sufficient.
