When my computer is idling and there are zero programs running, there is still hard drive noise at different time intervals. How do I stop the Windows background programs which are causing this noise. I am guessing they are programs like System Restore and automatic archiving/indexing or something like that. Are there any more that I've missed?

    Thanks a lot.

    Hiya

Its usual for the hrad drive to keep ticking over, but if its continous, lets have a look at the background stuff.

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here. If you cannot paste, Actions | Save as Text File and copy/paste that way.

    Regards

You can Unselect Indexing services in System Configuration Utility/Services.

I took a look and it's nothing to serious. I have like 5 programs only. I defragmented my drive and let me tell you, what a difference!
