Hi Guys
This might take a bit of time and I'm not sure if I am in the right place.
Before christmas I opened an msn account for a girl at college and her boyfriend. A while later she left him and came to live with me, saying one of the reasons was that he was recieving pornographic e mails , so he must have been on pornographic websites
We were able to access his msn because obviously she knew his password and to be honest so did I, as I set up the accounts.
There was pornographic e mail on there, but I dont know of anyone who hasn't had this at one time to be honest.
Lo and behold she went back with him, as they do. But the thing that has been upsetting me is, that she is now saying that while they were on his msn, they were watching someone opening his e mails??? and as I am the only one that knows his password it must have been me in there at the same time, so I was the one downloading the pornographic material. Is that possible????
It certainly wasn't me and I dont understand what they must have seen.
I am not a computer whiz kid I am just an ordinary guy. but the one thing I do know is that they do not use a firewall or anti virus.
I know its hard for you guys as you dont know me, but this has really upset me and I would really appreciate it if anyone can give me some sort of answer
Thank you all very much in advance

Hi GARETHREES

If they have a trojan on their computer - and that sounds very likely from what you say above - then anyone could be accessing their computer

If you want to help them secure their computer - and get back in their good books

Tell them to Run a free on-line virus scan here :-

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

or here :-

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

and do a trojan scan here :-

http://www.anti-trojan.net/at.asp?l=en&t=onlinecheck

This way they can make sure they do not have a virus or trojan

Then tell them to get a free anti-virus from AVG

http://www.grisoft.com

And a free Firewall from Zonealarm

Hey there,

As for the pornographic emails at Hotmail I get them all the time. I don't know where they come from, I could check my email anytime day or night and there is at least 30.

Thank you guys

I did try to tell them this, but at the moment is suits them to think it was me doing it through msn. I know for a fact you cant, just sit there and watch some one who has signed in to your msn as well, opening your mails.

I suspect a trojan. I am on broadband and use Norton firewall and sometimesget at least 2 - 3 attacks a day with back door sub seven trojans.

Oh well I guess I have to let them get on with it but at least you have made me feel a lot better, and I am forever grateful

Cheers Guys.

Gareth - in an attempt at salvaging your friendship
- why don't you tell them to change their password?
- or type them up step by step instructions on how to open a new account on HotMail or Yahoo or ...

See this thread http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=117043 - ilusha2 suggests
Netscape and Angelfire are definitely the best EMAIL accounts. They have 0 junk mail. And I do mean 0. 0,0,0! I don't mean 1 or 2 junk mails a month, I mean none at all, period. I didn't log in to Netscape for like half a year, and I didn't get any messages. Now, of course, if you start giving out your email address to companies or people you don't know well, well of couse then you might start getting junk mail. I mean that initially, when you create the account, you won't get any junk. So if you do, hand your email address out carefully. Angelfire is not giving out any addresses right now, though.
Anyway - let your buddies know that there are other eMail options out there - I hope y'all kiss and make up ... but please let them know that they put others at risk if they do not protect their own machine (as per steam's response)

by the way - my husband & I just checked this out! We both logged into one of our HotMail accounts at the same time - we could not see 'real-time' what the other was doing (he sent a message, I read one) ... took about 5 minutes for the status to refresh

cheers

I forgot to mention that they told me they cannot change their password because apparently I have altered their secret question on msn????
Can anyone honestly tell me if you can do that, if you can, what is the point of having a secret question.

I think I just need to go out and find a woman with a bit of sense and leave these 2 to it.

Thanks again and I feel more than welcome to be on board.

BTW what kind of spam you get isn't related to what you actually do online.
I don't smoke but I still got "Emergency Cigarette Sale" messages today.
You can't judge a book by its cover, or a man by his junk mail :D

You might want to point this out to your friends.

The awnser to the secret question is to be used if you forget your current password....awnser the secret question and you will have access to the mailbox.

If you know the current password,,,then that is all you need to create a new password. All the awsers to these questions are available at the emailbox website,, if they are not reading them then whose fault is it? I would'nt let it worry me,, I know they are at the least causing you to feel miserable, but if they are old enough to accuse then they are old enough to read.. personally I would leave them to it. Don't let it bother you,, you know what you are and are not doing.

I personally find it very hard to accept the fact that someone who has the ability to be so kind and make me feel good about myself can turn like a switch and do exactly the opposite. I went through it really hard one time and so I tried to find other things to do to occupy my time... I started trying to help people here,, and believe me there is nothing like trying to figure out a computer problem for someone,, it will smoke your brain and it takes your mind off things. Take care and good luck.
