I was using some of my pictures on a website but I don't want people to copy one of my pictures and saying it's theirs. I want to have the thumbnail (in a gallery) without a watermark and then you click on it and then on the full sized version there's transparent diagonal writing like www.sampleurl.com or by: john smith .. but I dont know how to insert a watermark with paintshop pro or paint or whatever. Then the people could buy the photo and no watermark.

Paint Shop Pro 7 has watermark method indicated on the help screen. Strangly I cannot find a way to add using Photoshop Elements although there is a filter to read the watermark.
Elsewhere on this techguy site there are indications a free version of Paintshop is available for download.

Make the image that you want to use as the watermark as normal, then overlay it on top of the image that you want to watermark, and reduce the opacity to around 25-40%
