Folks:

It is simple. First, copy the subfolder WUSB54GC from the LINKSYS COMPACT WIRELESS folder in the C:\Program Files folder. (I may have the exact name wrong but you will see it -- it contains the files rt73.bin, rt73.inf, rt73.sys and rt73.cat although this may depend on your version). Again, COPY this folder to the root of the C drive or onto your desktop. DO NOT MOVE IT -- COPY IT. Next, remove the Linksys wireless USB device from the USB port and then uninstall the software from the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS control panel. Then reboot.

After reboot, insert the COMPACT WIRELESS USB adapter again and this time when it wants to look for drivers direct the New Hardware Wizard to get the drivers from the WUSB54GC folder you copied in my instructions above.

This worked great for me just a few minutes ago, and as you can see from this posting I am on the Internet and I do have my FAST USER SWITCHING mode enabled.

Good Luck,
Tom

Are you saying that by removing gtgina.dll you can not log on to any WEP secured wireless access point? That seems unacceptable.

:( I need help... I newly installed a compact wireless g adapter to my mom's pc. as i restart the pc, it changed my login screen. As I'm reading the thread, I've noticed that I'm the only person who have done the most stupid thing possible... i tried getting rid of GTGina.dll

i feel so stupid following Mcafee when it asked me to uninstall GTGina.dll. I didn't actually delete it... instead I just removed it from my system32 folder... just wanted to see if it would no longer make anymore conflicts with the login screen... anyway, as i restarted the computer.. i'm now having problem logging on to my mom's pc. It's keeps on saying that it's missing the GTGina.dll and is prompting me to restart pc and see if they'd be able to restore it.

Tried restarting the pc twice and still the same thing. Would restoring the pc help?

I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP!!!

hey guys!

I just called linksys and i spent over 3hours on the phone with them. they said my problem was very common but they could not give me an easy fix. i talked to 4 techs. and the forth one was a supervisor she walked me through the same steps that the other 3did and i finally deleted all forms of the adaptor and rebooted and it worked and i just used the windows wireless connection to get to the internet it is working just fine. i just wanted to let everyone know that that is another option

I simply un-installed the Linksys App (using their uninstall program). Then, Windows XP Pro seemed to find the correct drivers OK. I had to re-sonfigure the wireless netork connection with the WPA key, but that was probably to b expected.

Another note: I ried to and did delete GTGina.dll by booting XP Pro in SAFE mode (I did "without Network"). HOWEVER, I was not able to log on to XP then and had to "RESTORE" the file from the waist basket freo SAFE mide. I.E. -- Don't waist your time trying to manually delete the file.

I did the dumbest thing possible...I deleted GTGina.dll completely, and tried to restart my computer...of course, it wouldn't load Windows, and I spent an hour trying to log on and replace the stupid thing. Has anyone figured out how to restore Fast User Switching while still using the adapter?

I have been through a few itterations now and I am pretty frustrated now, too. However, I "think" I have the kid's PC back to where it will use the Quick User Swithing and be available in Windows Networking... I simply "unistalled" the lynksys application using their UNISTALL application from the START->PROGRAMS->{whatever linksys called there app}. Then I used windows to configure the wireless network. I also switched the router to just use WEP (instead of WPA). This has worked again for a day and a half and a couple of re-boots.

I do not know the security ramifications. I have read that WPA is better than WEP, so that's a negative. I do not know for sure, but I also suspect that lynksys MAY have made the PC operate the way you are describing for security reasons. Since this is just a PC for home {kids homework and games}, I will take my chances there.

Hope this helps,

Perhaps I should have noted that even though I did an "uninstall" of the linksys software, apparently the low-level "drivers" required by windows were left in tact. I didn not do anything in particular (taht I am aware of) to make this happen, but if Windows can't figure out how to play with the USB device, perhaps you can go through the NEW HARDWARE detection process and browse to the CD to get only the applicable driver (i.e., without "installing" the linksys S/W).
