You must first find where the old hard drive is and remove it - the old goes in its place. You may be able to find a manul on the web, Compaq may even have one on their website. Generally if you flip the laptop upside down you should see a small removal panel thats held in with one or two screws - once you remove it the hard drive slides out. In rare cases you need to disassemble the entire laptop to get to the hard drive.

Once you have the new drive physically installed and you start the computer, it should be detected that the drive has changed and to save the new settings. If this does not happen you may need to enter the BIOS setup, usually by pressing F2(or DEL, F10, F1) and find and change the hard drive settings accordingly. Then you may also need to change the boot order to include the CD-ROM so that it is before the hard drive in the sequence.

Then you must reinstall Windows and the software - if you have the Recovery CD's from Compaq then this is an easy procedure and you just need to follow the onscreen instructions.

    # Remove the battery cover and remove the battery
    # Turn the notebook upside-down.
    # Remove the 4 Torx T-8 screws. 3 located towards the front of the computer and the 4th at the edge of the battery slot.
    # Turn the notebook right-side-up.
    # Lift the LCD to its upright position.
    # Carefully lift up the palmrest making sure not to tug on the mouse's ribbon cable and let it rest on the keyboard. WARNING! If you tug on the cable you will disconnect the mouse and it is NOT EASY to reconnect!

    # Remove the hard drive from its bracket.
    # Place the new hard drive into the bracket.
    # Attach the 4 Torx T-8 screws that were removed in STEP #9.
    # Attach the hard drive ribbon cable to your new hard drive.
