How do I physically install a laptop modem (preferabley an internal one) in a "550 TOSHIBA CDT". And what kind of modem would one recommend. When can I get repair manuals that can guide me. A buddy mentioned something along the lines of "Laptop Modem 56K PC Card PCMCIA". Is that a good idea? If so, why?

I have never heard of an after market internal laptop modem you install. Normally you purchase a PC card (PCMCIA) modem, which is the about the size of a credit card. It's plugged into the side of the unit. Once installed the laptop will see it and ask for drivers, which come with the modem on floppy or a CD.

If you are looking for manuals, go to Toshibas web site. They even have the docs for older laptops like this one archived. It is as DanO says....the PCMCIA slots should be standard on that model and you can go to any retail outlet and ask for a PCMCIA modem. The modems do come with installation instructions.
