How do I set the environment variable using the command line

On one of my PCs, I get "The system could not find the environment option that was entered" when I try to open the command prompt at the administrator level (and when I try to pen various other things). I think I need to reset the windir system environment variable, but I can't do it through the GUI - properties of the Computer won't open at all. I've read that it can be done using setx, but I'm not that familiar with the syntax needed when working with the command line. As far as I can tell, I need three parts - setx, %windir%, and C:\. How do I put these together the right way? I can boot into an administrator-level command prompt in Safe mode, so I'd like to give it a try.

You may want to check the Path variable(s) before making any other changes (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment Variables). Check the User Path and the System Path statements.

If that doesn't work you may want to see if Tweaking.com's Windows Repair All in One can help to correct the system parameters and settings.

Download both of the versions unless you know what type of system you have (32 bit or 64 bit). If you can not get them to run in Normal boot mode you can try Safe Mode. Try running FRST.exe first and then FRST64.exe; only one will run on your system.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 32bit and save it to your Desktop.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64bit and save it to your Desktop.

  • Right click the FRST file on your desktop and select "Run as Administrator..." (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • If an update is available, the program will inform you and download the update. Allow it do this please.
  • Once the tool shows "The tool is ready to use." message, please press the Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.

Boot the system into Safe Mode and run this procedure.

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Run FRST by right clicking on the FRST.exe file, selecting "Run as Administrator..". The User Account Control may open up; if it does, select Yes to continue to let FRST open and load.

The tool will check for an updated version of itself every time it loads; please allow it to do this and the program will either inform you it is downloading an updated copy (and to wait until it is safe to continue) or show that it is ready to use (meaning there is no update found) and you can continue on. Press the Fix button just once and wait. The tool will create a restore point, process the script and ask for a restart of your system.

If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.

When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the log in your next reply.

Also, tell me if the .exe association is back to normal. We still have some cleaning to do, so post the Fixlog.txt (you can attach it if you like) and we will continue from there.

Can you run the following FRST in normal mode? If not, do it in Safe Mode.

We need to get a fresh scan from FRST.
  • If you still have the Addition.txt file on your desktop, please delete it now.
  • Right click the FRST file on your desktop and select "Run as Administrator..." (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • If an update is available, the program will inform you and download the update. Allow it do this please. Otherwise, just wait for the "The tool is ready to use." message.
  • Please check the Addition.txt in the Option Scan section of FRST.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The tool will generate will another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

FIRST >>>>

Please go to START (Windows Orb) >> Control Panel >> Uninstall a Program or Programs and Features and remove the following (if listed):

ShopAtHome.com Helper
ShopAtHome.com Toolbar
Coupon Printer for Windows

To do so, left clicking on the name once and then click Uninstall/Change at the bar above the list window.

Follow the prompts of the uninstaller BUT please read carefully any questions it asks before answering; some uninstallers will try and deceive you into keeping the software.

SECOND >>>>

Download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST by right clicking on the FRST.exe file, selecting "Run as Administrator..". The User Account Control may open up; if it does, select Yes to continue to let FRST open and load.

I know you tried this before but just to be sure, here are the steps for Windows Repair utility. Please run through all the steps in order. Thanks.

Please download "Windows Repair - All in One" from here. Please choose "Save file.." if you get options to open the file. Once the download is complete, run the file and install the program on your system. Please use the default settings for locations as it will help with log retrieval and fixing the registry should anything be needed.

Right click on the desktop shortcut for "Tweaking.com - Windows Repair" and select 'Run as administrator'.

The program will run a self check to make sure that all the correct files are in place for it to run and then it will load the program. As you can see, there are many steps to take in using this program. Mainly, the first few steps involve checking for proper Windows files and backing up the system as a precaution.

You can read the notes on the first screen but the important thing to do is click on "ReBoot to Safe Mode" and allow the system to restart itself. Once the system is started in safe mode and you have logged in (using an administrative level account), restart the program and move onto the Step2 screen.

Please click on "Open Pre-Scan" to load a utility to verify some Windows resource / build files and settings.

Click on "Start Scan" and allow the routine to run. You can see the status of the checks in the window.

When the routine is finished, it will report on any problems found and you can click on the appropriate repair button if needed. Once this is done, you can close this window and click on Step3.

Click on the "Check" to see if a repair disk check routine needs to run. A Command Prompt window will open and you can view the status of the routine. If the routine finds that repairs need to be made, please select "Open Disk Check at Next Boot" and then click on the "Reboot To Safe Mode" button. Once the routine(s) completes, please select Step4.

Please click on "Do It" to run a SFC /scannow routine. If the routine makes any repairs, please reboot your system (again into Safe Mode). If the routine does not make any repairs, please move onto Step5.

Once there, click on "Backup" under the 1. Registry Backup. This will make a complete backup of the current registry which can be reloaded should anything go wrong with the repairs that are going to be made. Next, click on the "Create" under 2. System Restore. Once both of these backups are made, select Repairs.

I would suggest that you read the Tips For The Best Repairs Results. Once this is done, click on "Open Repairs".

On this screen, click the following: Defaults. The screen and options should look very much like the picture above. Click "Start Repairs" and confirm that the program starts running the fixes. This will take a while to run, so you can let it run unattended if you like. Log files are being recorded as the repairs are being executed. Once the repairs are finished, reboot your system (normal boot now) and tell me how it is running now.

Both ShopAtHome.com Toolbar and Coupon Printer for Windows were still listed in Programs, but they would not uninstall. Every time I tried, Windows Explorer restarted and I was kicked out of the control panel.

I ran FRST anyway - in safe mode as it wouldn't run in normal mode (got the system environment error message). It went very quickly, so I'm not sure it was able to do what it needed. I did notice the log said a restore point could only be created in normal mode.

I tried to run Windows Repair utility in both normal mode and safe mode. Normal mode gave me the system environment error, and it wouldn't run in safe mode at all (no error message).

It's not looking good.

I won't be available to reply to your next post until Monday evening. I do appreciate all your help!

I ran the scan and attached the resulting log. Here's the message I got in the command window:

Beginning verification phase of system scan
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

I don't think the scan got very far because of this - it went too quickly.

I hate to inform you of this but the only way I see to repair your system is to boot into the Recovery Environment and preform a "Repair Install" of Win7. If you have your license key, you can borrow a disk or download Win7 from Microsoft.
