I am trying to reformat my hard drive with little success. I am using XP as my operating system. After reinstalling XP I am still left with files and folders that should have been erased from the hard drive. Please help!

    How are you installing?

If you boot from CD, you have the option right after accepting the license to remove partitions, create new ones, and to format the drive. If you do these things, nothing will remain from the earlier installation.

I did boot from the cd and was asked to repartition, which I thought I did correctly as the message I got was all data will be erased. Thanks for the reply. I will try again, but will make sure to save this site in case I fail again.

Your drive manufactirer no doubt has tools for formatting drives from a floppy (even NTFS). What drive(s) do you have?

I always recommend these guides for installing Windows XP. If you follow these correctly, you should not have any problems.

    Install XP Home

    XP Pro Install
