My laptop is not working at all
It's a Dell with windows xp

When you switch it on, the start button doesn't work, and neither do any of the desktop icons

Only the task manager works nothing else.

And also, how do you start a computer in safe mode? And will that help?

when booting up tap the f8 key repeatedly select safe mode, when you get to desktop run an anti virus scan and then try doing a system restore. I hope this is what you meant.

in the task manager, click File, NEW TASK (RUN ...), type EXPLORER.EXE and click OK

to boot into safe mode do one of the following:

press F8 right after the post screen to display the boot options menu and choose safe mode

    or

start, run, type MSCONFIG and click OK, click on BOOT.INI and check the box /SAFEBOOT (don't forget to clear this box when in safe mode, or you'll be stuck in a safe boot loop)

    or

download and run BOOTSAFE (run BOOTSAFE in safe mode again to start windows normally)
