I've had systems running for months, so having to restart after 24 hours would indicate something is amiss.

I haven't turned mine off in over three years or so. The server at the office hasn't been rebooted since it was built, somewhere around six years ago.

i shut them down at nite and restart when needed.

"sometimes restart" means what, by itself or are you doing a restart?

If your system supports hibernation, and/or standby, why not use it? I use S3 resume w/ suspend to ram to power everything down until I need it. Then I just touch the mouse or hit a key on the remote or keyboard, and it's up and ready.

It's all a matter of choice. Some say it puts stress on the hardware to leave it running 24/7 and some say it stresses it more to start it up every day. It's a totally personal thing. Whatever makes you happy. I don't think it matters to the computer either way. Good luck.
