Flavalle - To answer your question, the recovery cd's come with no service packs of Windows XP. I have used the recovery partition in the past. The issue is that the recovery partition has become corrupted after doing a clean install of Windows 7 home premium,

Further, I checked to see the contents of the CD and only found recovery files and dll's but no setup.exe for Windows.

If the factory reset CD you have for Windows XP 32-bit does not contain any service pack (SP1, SP2, SP3), that means you have the original version which was released in late 2001.
Even if you're successful in installing it, it will be basically useless because you won't be able to go on-line and do anything with it.

You will need to install SP1 first before you can install SP3.
And if you're able to get that far, you will still have an operating system that's out of date all the way back to mid 2008.
And Microsoft no longer allows you to obtain and install updates beyond that.
Honestly, you're fighting a losing battle.

I have Norton Security antivirus so I do not think it is unsafe at all to use Windows XP in 2020.

I would look into selling that PC, it's probably a collector's item and you might get enough for it to buy yourself a modern one.

To get back to the question, can someone please help me figure out how many recovery cd's I need for this machine? I do not want any alternatives just facts to help me. I don't want nonsense like selling my computer as I have clearly stated before this machine is still useful.

All I know for sure is that Windows XP Pro fits on one CD. Any OS after that was on a DVD because they were larger. I have XP Pro from when I was a Microsoft MVP through my MSDN subscription. Of course, that doesn't answer your question either.

I notice you've marked the thread solved and I wonder why. Nevertheless, it appears no one can answer your question exactly. I did a lot of research earlier to try to find the answer but came up empty. Most of what I found was very vague.

Just out of curiosity can you take a picture of the two CDs you have a upload them here?

I never marked the thread solved, I wonder why it's saying that when it's really not!

... those CDs are for installing Windows back to the default setup it came with... which is what you are trying to do. There would be no other CD needed, as I explained on page 1.

1) power up the PC
2) open the CD drive tray
3) Place CD 1 in the tray
4) restart the PC and go into the Bios and set CD drive as first boot device, save and exit bios
5) it should start installing XP

Let us know if the above worked.

My idea to sell that PC isn't nonsense it was meant to help you.
