How many USB devices can I have connected?

OK: sounds like a dumb question.
Everyone shopuld know that you can have upto 128 devices all conncted by USB - right...?

I use USB extension wires: these seem to cause problems.

If I want to extend the lenght... should I simply connect several USB hubs?

Are USB extentions known to cause problems?

If I have 5 USB hubs connected all of of each other: will I have problems when I connect a device to the last one?

Thanks.

I think the main two considerations are power and traffic.

Clearly, power hungry devices will require at least some powered USB hubs.

The more traffic (e.g., networking means lots of traffic), the more likelihood for clashes and slowdowns.

I'm pretty sure there are maximum recommended distances for USB, but I do not have such info handy.

If you do a search on the web, the common answer appears to be

"The maximum distance a standard USB cable should be is 5 meters (16 feet). With the addition of USB hubs the distance can be extended to 30 meters using a 5-meter cable between each hub. "

The description under the section called Cables explains why.
