Occasionally when surfing I get annoying adverts for sex websites that come up and seem to take control of Explorer. The task bar and menu bar disappear and I can't work out how to close these sites or adverts and get back to the previous page. Is CTRL-W the answer? It doesn't always seem to work.

First look at the page real close, sometimes the way to close it is hidden. Do a ctrl-alt-del and select the one you want closed.

Of course, I just read this somewhere. ;)

PopUpKiller will close most annoying ads before they have a chance to open. Run this file and read the help file on setup. Otherwise CTRL ALT DEL and Stop Task on the offending page.

Try hitting ALT-F4 a couple of times.

If you do this quickly enough, you will stop new windows from opening when you close the old window.

    Hiya

You may also want to do this

Tools | Internet Options. Advanced tab. Under Browsing, untick Enable Install On Demand.

    Apply and OK

    Regards

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
Go to Control Panel/Internet Options, and clear your temporary Internet files.
Now click on Settings/show files, and delete your cookies.
Or, if you're running IE 6.0, delete your cookies on the Privacy tab

But it may well be an app starting up as Windows loads.
Sp.dll, winn32.html, MSKernel32 (Win32.hta) and others are notorious for doing this kind of thing.

    Post your Startup programs:

Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
    Go to Software Environment/Startup Programs.
Now click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'
Paste the contents in your post.

    Good luck,
