I use an old CompUSA PC-Linq cable, its USB and works great. I have Vista Home Premium on my desktop and Windows XP SP2 on one of my laptops. CompUSA is going out of business but there are several other cables of the same type (Lap Link for example). Just for info, you cannot simply connect an ordinary USB cable between the two machines for the transfer(s).

If both computers are connected to the same local network with no problems, you should be able to just configure file sharing on each computer to transfer your files.

If both computers are not on a network, you can use a direct connection between both computers. Microsoft has an 8 part direct connection guide that may be of some help.
