    I want to download backup copies in flat text files of my emails

    What program do I use?

    In the past, I used Thunderbird - that did the trick
    The only thing is, I had to use an older version as the latest version didn't do what I needed

    Any other Open Source alternatives?

    Thanks

    what didnt it do ?
    i have had a few versions of thunderbird and they seem to work ok
    unless you are talking about the email settings
    as the later version will try and set-up as imap rather than POP
    setup as POP - make sure leave a copy on server is ticked - BEFORE you say OK
    and the files will be in .eml format under username\appdata\roaming

    @etaf, thanks
    i can't remember what it didn't do - i definitely had problems :)
    i'm using the latest version to download emails from my old gmail account now using thunderbird
    this is very painful. downloading is very very slow.
    the worst thing is that it only downloads 450 emails in one go and then says it's done
    i have to hit get new messages again
    just changed to check new messages every 1 min - but this will still be painfully slow

    surely there must be a pain free way to get your emails all in one go?

    let me know what u think
    thanks

    Thunderbird usually downloads all in 1 go
    on POP setting
    and I have setup new PCs for people and downloaded between 6-25,000 emails - and it does not stop
    Same for imap

    BUT the speed of download will depend on what else is running on the network using up bandwidth and also what sort of download speed you have

    @etaf, thanks for the reply
    i've left it running. i don't know if the check every 1 min did the trick, but it's now downloading
    i checked, and i have 34,000 emails - this is super important, as i would otherwise not know if all emails have been downloaded

    i think i should be ok from here

    thanks :)
