There are many ways to format a harddrive but each method will produce different results for a specific purpose. Are you trying to reinstall an operating system or just use the drive for storage?

If you are looking to just start fresh with a clean drive, I cannot blame you. My suggestion would be to backup all important data. Then, if you are running Windows XP, boot off of the Windows XP CD and you should be able to follow the prompts just fine from there.

If you want to leave the operating system intact, I'd just delete the files individually. If you would like a fresh/clean copy of windows, just boot from an install cd or use the restore partition of your harddrive if you have one.
