I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop that I bought from a neighbor. It came with Vista installed on it and I want to replace that with Windows XP. The problem is that it will not read an XP installation CD. I tried to run an ISO CD (Darik's Nuke and Boot) and it won't read that either. I know that the hard drive normally has to be designated differently for installing XP or Vista, but there is no where on the laptop to do that.

If I put the Vista CD in, it takes right off ..... just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Does it read the XP cd with Vista booted?.Perhaps if your using a "backup" cd the media might not be compatable with the drive.

There is no place in BIOS to change the sata.

And no it's not a backup copy, but a re-installation CD

Have you confirmed that XP drivers are available for the devices in that Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop?

Even if you're able to get XP installed in that laptop, it won't do you much good if there's no drivers for its devices, especially the wired/wireless adapters.

----------------------------------------------------------------

What computer did the reinstallation CD come with, and what does it say on the CD?

----------------------------------------------------------------

If that laptop has a SATA hard drive(which I suspect it does), that's your biggest roadblock right now to overcome.

I had XP installed - got infected - wanted to wipe the whole thing clean and re-install, but can't. If I could change the hard drive designation, I would as I know that it's different for XP and Vista. And Dell has no drivers for Vista for this model - they're all for XP.

Help ........... I hate Vista.

I'm not aware that you previously had XP installed in that laptop. I replied to you, based on your original comment:

"I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop that I bought from a neighbor. It came with Vista installed on it and I want to replace that with Windows XP. The problem is that it will not read an XP installation CD."

And Dell has no drivers for Vista for this model - they're all for XP.
Did you mean to say that Dell has no drivers for XP and that they're all for Vista?

What's the "service tag number" on the case sticker?

Here is the Dell support and software site that's specific only to that Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop.

You're correct in that there are no Vista drivers and that there are only XP drivers listed at the site.

That laptop was manufactured in September 2003, so it's pretty obvious that Vista did not come pre-installed in it.

These are the XP drivers that you need to install - if you do need them after you get XP installed:

ATI Mobility M7

SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Network Controller

Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN MiniPCI Card
