how to network win98 with win2000

I have a desktop w/Win 98 and a laptop w/Win 2000, now I would like to put these computers in networking, so I can get on line on both computers at the same time. My desktop is using the cable modem for internet access. My laptop is using a pc card 100 Base-TX Ethernet, and my desktop is using a Fast ethernet adapter (NC100 v 2. Please instruct me how to network these two computers by pc card or usb cable. Thanks so much.
