I'm trying to find a new router and I have no idea what to look for in a router, if anyone can give me tips on buying a router, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm currently using D-Link Di-614+ Wireless G and it's time for an upgrade. I'm trying to keep the price under $100 if possible.

Forget it. If your router is running fine, there is nothing under $100 that will improve your performance.

My router is not fine, it disconnects way too much. And it's a real problem since my sister's college classes are online. . . And if I can't find one for under $100, what would you suggest?

Modem: Speedstream 5100
Router: Di-614+

I prefer Linksys for reliability.
N is great, but remember your other hardware must support it as well.

Other hardware? Such as the adapter? If that is the case, I already have a few extras for my other computers.

Fine, that is a reason to replace it, but you didn't say that. You can go on buying under $100 routers and it really doesn't matter the brand as you will have the same issues every few years or buy this one and forget about the problems forever as I did.

and I paid $175 for it.

I've never paid more than $60.00 for a router, and never had a problem.

I too never paid more than $60 for a router but I always had to replace it in 2 years and same is true for most of my clients. So you have had exceptional luck!

Why would you suggest the Linksys? The reviews doesn't suggest that it's that great of a product. I prefer to understand what I'm buying rather than just picking a random one without understanding how to configure it.

Experience.
I've had one problem, which Linksys fixed quickly, and they have excellent support.
As far as understanding how to configure it goes, they're all quite similar, but you'll need to do some homework to understand it.

I hihgly recommend that model as I said I bought it at $175 and the signal I have now goes almost 2 blocks vs every other router I had that barely covered both floors in my townhouse.
