Hi people. I have a strange situation here, so please let me explain:

I have made an image backup of my newly installed windows XP Pro SP2 with few essential programs, in case I need to reinstall Windows. That was 5 months ago.

Yesterday I got 'corrupted boot sector' message when I tried to start my computer up. So I tried Windows CD recovery console, tried fixboot and fixmbr which seemed to help but the Windows would freeze at the WinXP screen just before it loads desktop.

After that I imaged my HDD (backup) with this windows that cannot boot up properly. I reformated my HDD completly and tried to restore my newest backup (with windows boot problem) but it still did the same thing.

So now I am writing this from my 5months old backup. All the data is safe but I would really hate to reinstall 50Gb worth of programs again.

Is there a way I can copy my bad windows copy over the 5 months old copy so all my programs would work? DO I just need to import the registry file or system32 folder as well?

Or maybe you can help me fix windows from my newest backup.

Any other options on how to solve my problem would be apreciated.
Thanks
