The Gateway Solo 2500 laptop appears to be about 17 - 18 years old.
Based on its age and the hardware it came with, you're wasting your time trying to sell or donate it.

You could always try to sell it to someone who likes to collect older parts/computers. If nothing else you can keep it for years down the road, or visit a recycling center that takes in electronics and such. As for wiping your computer, do you by chance have the floppy disk/or CD....? You can format it, and reinstall there.

Also: To completely wipe it(not just format), you'll need to use a reputable 3rd party program to delete the data. Since stuff can be recovered, even after format.

Thank you for your reply. I'll check out the link you gave.
I'm sure there are collectors...finding them is another matter. ☺

Thank you for your opinion. I still need to wipe it even if it's recycled.

There's a freeware called "Killdisk" that'll allow you to create a bootable CD/DVD. THen you boot from there and can wipe the hard drive. DO note that the free version has some limitations as to the types of wiping available.

Most manufacturers have utilities that not only can diagnose disk issues, They generally also howe utilities that'll allow the user to wipe their disks clean. I still find, however, that "Killdisk", even the free one, is the best tool for that. Unless you have some seriously important stuff on the frive? Then a single run that sets all to Zero should sufficient. For added security you can run it more than once, if necessary.
