    Hello all,

    I'm after some help/advice please?

I have a Compaq Mini Netbook with windows XP installed on it. I would like to sell the netbook however I obviously want to erase my hard drive of any personal data etc and restore the NetBook to factory settings (as in when I bought it new) and leave windows on for the potential buyer!

As with most netbooks it doesn't have a CD drive and already came with windows XP installed. Can anybody give me any insight into how I can accomplish this please?

I would be really grateful for any advice given!!

    Thanks,
    Scott

Try tapping the F6 function key on boot-up. That may bring up a factory restore option.

The factory restore should remove the old file directory structure but may leave remnants of the old files on the disk. There are various utilities available that can be used to overwrite the free space on the drive to remove those remnants. Maybe someone else here can recommend a good free one.

What's the HP product number on the sticker so we can determine the exact model of that HP/Compaq Mini netbook?

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the response, really appreciated. I'll definitely try the F6 button on start up, thanks.

As for the model/product number it is: Compaq-38184C6A with an Intel Atom CPU 1.60 GHz. Hope that is of use?

    Thanks,
    Scott

    That's not the product number.

See if you can find your particular model in this list or this list.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click MY COMPUTER to open its main window.

What drive letters and drive names are listed there?

    Hi,

Apologies for the delayed response!! Unfortunately the sticker with the product code has rubbed off and the links you have put keep taking me to Google!! Must be a problem my end I think!!

In terms of drives, there are:
    Local Disk (C:) Local Disk

    And that's it!!

    Thanks, scott

If only ( C: ) Local Disk is listed in MY COMPUTER, there's no built-in recovery partition in that netbook to do a system recovery from.

Since a netbook doesn't have a built-in optical drive, you need to use an external USB optical drive to load the recovery CD kit - if you can find and buy one from HP.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

The links I gave you are Google links that contain a list of HP Mini and Compaq Mini models.

I was wanting you to look at the list to see if you can spot your particular model.

    Hey flavallee,

Thanks for the reply!! I have tried to look at your links however they are just coming up with google and no links to HP or Compaq mini models, it's basically just showing the google search box. Sounds like I need to buy an optical drive (or even better, borrow one) and buy a recovery CD. I didn't think it would be straightforward, haha. thanks for all your help and advice, it's really appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott

You're not going to be able to buy a recovery CD kit for that netbook without knowing its exact model.

It's also unknown if the HP customer care site or the Computer Surgeons HP Recovery Center site has one available to buy.

You may need to buy an actual XP CD to format the hard drive and do a clean install of XP.

Once you get an external USB optical drive and connect it to that netbook, you'll need to go into the BIOS setup screen and set the boot order to where that optical drive is listed first.

You can try right clicking on "My Computer" and selecting Properties. That should give you a system information box that may include the computer model number and possibly the serial number.

What happened when you tried the F6 key at power up?

    Hi Chuck,

I haven't tried the F6 button yet as I'm in the process of cleaning up the hard drive but as soon as that's done I'll give it a go for sure!!

    Thanks

According to that product number, that netbook is a Compaq Mini 700EA model.

Here is the support and software site for it.

Here is the HP image creator file that supposedly will allow you to restore it to factory settings.

You will need a USB thumb drive of 2 GB capacity or larger and a computer with an internet connection that has Windows XP or newer.

    Good luck.
