I have an older (2001) HP Pavilion a1110n computer with a HP DVD Writer 640c. It opens to accept a CD but will not play. I checked Device Manager and there are no red or yellow tags next to the hardware. How do I troubleshoot? If it is defective, is an external CD player a good option? Thanks in advance.

    1) How do I know for sure the DVD writer is defective?
    2) What is a good brand name for a replacement?
    3) Where is a good source to purchase a new one?
    4) Are all replacements a standard size?

    1. Open Device Manager and uninstall this device. See if it works when you reboot.
    2. Sony, Samsung, Lite-on.
    3. I like Tiger Direct.

4.They are basically all the same size, just make sure the interface is the same (SATA/PATA). Yours is almost certainl;y a PATA because of its age.

According to its support site, the HP Pavilion a1110n desktop was manufactured in May 2005 and came with one of these model optical drives:

    "HP DVD Writer 640b" DVD-RW

    "Lite-On SHW-16H5S" DVD-RW

    "HL-DT-ST GWA-4166B" DVD-RW

You might want to read here and see if you can find a solution to the problem.

You might also want to read here on how to replace an optical drive.

Optical drives do go bad after awhile. You can buy a decent one for $30 - $40.
