Hi everyone, this is the first time Im posting on here so please bear with me.
The situation: HP laptop hangs on "Windows is starting up..." screen for ever and a day! Ive tried safe mode but its gets to exactly the same point and than doesnt go any further. I havent tried any other remedies as I thought Id seek some advice since Im not that with-it on these technical issues.
I have work on the hard drive that I would really like to be able to recover as otherwise I would have carried out a complete systems reinstall. Is there any way of me being able to do a reinstall and not loose my work?
From the things I've tried I can't even return the settings to the way they were when the laptop worked ok...
Right tried that last night with the hp Operating System CD which was sent by hp about a year ago. After the CDs which came with the laptop became corrupt, however they were just sent in transparent plastic sleeves with no paperwork.
The system recovery cds are literally plug and play no keys, no passwords etc, required. But the operating system cd requires the key for authenticity. Obviously this is where I have a problem as I didnt get a key.
Now one option would be for me to call hp, but that may take several days at least. I have the professional version of Xp operating system, is it possible to do a repair install with this instead of the Xp home version which came with the laptop??
Look on the side panels of the computer for a Certificate of Authorization key. I think this is what you need to use when prompted.
You can't do a repair with another version of the operating system.
