at work, just got new computers in the company .... trying to install the HP laserjet 4050N printer .... here is what happened:

    • used disc, setup file...
    • downloaded latest drivers
    • installed drivers
    • found 1 of the 2 printers, installed printer and TCP/IP Jet Direct Port
    • looked at installation notes, said it installed winNT4.0 drivers.
    • printed test page
    • printed OK
    • went to start->settings->printers
    • clicked add printer
    • browsed network for the 2nd printer
    • message saying it wasnt right software on the server (even though the printer is hooked directly into the network with the JetDirect Card, and has its own IP address)
    • asked to look for printer drivers elsewhere
    • pointed to the CD drivers
    • message saying its not the correct drivers for the current windows operating system

so i went to the HP site for updated drivers for the win2000 OS ... found them here:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNum=C4253A&prodName=hp+LaserJet+4050n+printer&locale=en_US&taskId=8418&taskName=download+drivers+%26+software&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25475&prodSeriesName=hp+LaserJet+4050+printer+series#Microsoft%20Windows%202000

in the middle, it lists these 2 printer drivers for them
    • HP LaserJet 4050 PCL 5e Printer Driver (2002-5-23 4.3.2.201)
    • HP LaserJet 4050 PCL 6 Printer Driver (2002-5-23 4.3.2.201)

which one do i download? both have same release date and version ...... so whats the difference between the 5e and the 6? i cant seem to find the answer ..... help?

I don't know what the difference between the two is, but if it helps, we have the same printers where I work and we use the 5e drivers...

These printers are they connected to a deticated print server ??

Also are you using a mixed OS environment ( some pc's using NT and some using 2K ) ??

the printer is not hooked directly to the server...its just assigned an IP address, and hooked to a network cable .... and i believe all the computers are setup to handle their own print jobs .....

PCs used to only consist of win98SE ...but now with these new machines, its also win2000 ....

but i tried download win2000 drivers from hp website, tried installing them on the win2000 machines, but didnt work

So it spool's local and not on the server ??

Do the 2K pc's have the JetDirect software installed, as well as the drivers ??

    Another question...

Is it assigned an IP on both the printer and print server ??

there is no print server .... there is a printer that is assigned an IP ...

but anyways, i fixed the problem .... i just re-installed the software and drivers for winNT ... then changed the driver in the printer properties and changed them to the win2000 drivers..it insalled allrgiht, then went to add the 2nd printer, and it installed..

apparently, when it went to install the 2nd printer, it went to use the 1st printer's software, and it figured it wasnt the correct one ....
