HP Officejet not recognized by computer

All too frequently my HP Officejet 4500 all-in-one printer is not recognized by my computer. This occurs when scanning, not with basic printing tasks. Error message says, "HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z (Copy 1) disconnected!" But checking its status via Control Panel, I'm told "0 Documents in queue, Printer ready." It's clearly not disconnected.

Additional error message says, "The HP imaging device was not found. Try the following steps." The suggested steps are all pretty obvious, such as, is the power cord connected?, etc. The only step that fixes the problem is to unplug the power cord and then plug it back in. Even this sometimes has to be repeated more than once.

If anyone knows how to get rid of this irritant, I'd love to know.
