My computer sometimes shuts down. It appears that this happens typically when i am trying to run a few things at the same time. Also my computer is slow to respond at times and I have lost the ability to log onto AOL most of the time using the desktop short cut. I can reload AOL and it will work ok for a few times and then same thing. Rest of internet is ok though

anyway for sometime now I have suspected by printer driver is part of the cause. When computer shuts down it comes back up and Microsoft says the shut down is due to a driver.

now today the printe quit working and there was no software evident.

i dowloaded the new software and driver and this now leads me to a question.

In the device Manager there is nothing listed specifically as a printer but there are 3 things that are related to the printer. they are:

Dot4HPZ12
Dot4PrintHPZ12
Dot4UsbHBZ12

I am wondering if these should all be here and if I need to disable one or more of the devices?

any help would be appreciated

Hi, No dont delete them, they are the correct ones.

What shows in the Printers folder where the HP would normally show up?

Have you run the uninstaller from Add/Remove Programs for the HP printer software/drivers?

HP has a setup/install guide online, if you post the printer model number info I can get you to that guide if you like.

The steps to remove all the stuff and reinstall are not difficult, just need to be done a certain way.

I was not going to delete those drivers but was just wondering if there was something wrong that had three things showing up in Device Manager

I had a problem a while back where my HP scanner and Printer were causing blue screen shut downs all the time and ended up reformatting the hard drive. At that time i could not uninstall the scanner and when i tried it would shut down the computer. I spent a lot of time with others at this website trying to reslove it and ended up giving up.

anyway when i reinstalled windows a couple months ago i would get the occasional shut down and then the message on start up that windows experienced a problem and detected it was in a driver. that is what led me to guess, perhaps incorrectly, that there was something wrong with the printer driver.

I may have taken things a bit fast as saturday, when the printer would not work, i went to the HP site and went into their online diagnostics and since it did not detect anything i went ahead and downloaded and installed the software/driver and the computer runs.

I can go to the HP site and check on the install guide and perhaps should try to remove everything and start over again althought the printer does seem to work ok.

Still have other issues though as my aol wont start up most of the time when i click on the desktop short cut and when doing too many things as i said the computer will just shut down. I had posted a HJT in another forum (operating systems) but nobody replied.

Thanks

Hi, I have installed and corrected installs for several of the HP USB printers and they do put several entries in Device Manager as you see.
If the scanner/printer has a media card reader they can be stubborn to get installed all the way. HP has 3 or 4 software things that need to be installed for photo printers that also have media card readers.

If things are working OK now, fine. You would see a yellow ! or red X in the Device Manager if anything was missing from the printer/scanner installation.

You have the general idea about finding the info about your machine at HP.
Might be a system resource problem or other hardware causing your AOL problem.
What IRQ and port is the modem using, if you use dialup.

What about the Network adapter if you have broadband? How much RAM do you have installed?
Has the computer ever given a virtual memory low message> Windows will tell you it is increasing virtual memory if that runs low.

I wanted to get that posted before another crash

do not get anything indicating running out of memory.

I had added memory a long time ago and things started acting up not long after so i tried using the new Ram and then the old Ram separate to see if it changed the stability. and nothing changed

no yellow or red check marks in the device manager.

suddenly it started to hit me that i do not notice a fan running much if ever. Perhaps there is a heat issue? although i have had the side cover off for some time now as i was having some trouble getting it back in place and too lazy to bother.

As to IRQ question I am afraid that is not in my vocabulary. So i do not know how to answer. I have a Cable Modem internet connection with a router so that another computer in the house can run on the internet also.

i was going to send a HJT scan after Ewido but since cant get thru Ewido first apparantly i can send a scan in advance. I should add that when i tried to cut and past a HJT scan results a few days ago the computer would shut down the second i would right click the mouse to paste. so in case i cant paste again i will post this note and then come back in a second with the HJT

Well in some respects i have the problem solved in that since my last reply i did get the printer working again. i feel silly as this happened before and i figured it out a couple weeks ago.

something is turning the print spooler off where you have to go in and put it back on to automatic. i wish i knew what was doing that unless something i did in msconfig did that. which is possible

still got the issue of device driver though that i am sure is going to happen again and this computer takes forever to start up. i know the aol security slows it down but it takes at least 2-3 minutes to get booted up.

Your problem sounds like it' might be either overheating or a bad power supply. A common symptom of each is unexpected shutdown or re-booting. I would first try vacuuming around the air intake. If you are comfortable with opening the case, try cleaning it out with a can of compressed air (available in most electronics stores).

Unplug the power cord, and be sure that you are well grounded before touching anything inside. Even better, wear an antistatic wrist strap. You can get one at any electronics store. Static electricity can fry your computer parts.

Put the nozzle right up to the opening in the PS making sure you get all the dust and dirt off the cooling fins. Be sure to hold the can upright, because tilting it may cause liquid propellant to spray out.

Make sure that nothing is interfering with the fan.

If the problem still persists, shop around for a replacement power supply, or take it to a repair shop.

Hi, If you do use the canned air, I would be a bit careful, as most of them can put enough moisture into nooks and crannies to cause problems if you start up the PC too soon after a good spraying. Let things air out before starting back up.

Running with the side cover off can cause more heat trouble than you think> they are more apt to not cool correctly with the side off due to not enough air current directly over and past the processor.
Keeping the case panel on supposedly directs air current the right way. It may help if you could use something to monitor the processor temperature, some systems have this feature built in.
Not sure whether your Dell does or not....I will look at the support info shortly and post back.
