You can get rid of Weather Bug on both systems, otherwise they are clean.

As Rollin'Rog pointed out, we need more info on:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wshield] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wshield.exe

All the standard search places come up empty on Wshield.exe

I was under the impression that it had to do with my McAfee Virusscan 7.o home edition and or the firewall that came bundled with it.

It may well be (must be short for WebShield then), I am just unable to find any web "hits" for it. But the software may be too new.

Tip: do a file search for it and right click on it and select Properties > Version.

Does it have any copyright info?

Look at the "created" date. That will be the date it was installed; does it correspond to the date you installed that McAfee version?

so, not that im all fraggled out since you lads didn't know what the wshield was..and none of my mates from a bbs knew what it is...im finally home...and here's what i found.

After searching on my c:\ for 'wshield' i got the following:

    6 hits

all of which could have been around the time i installed McAfee.
and none of which have any information about where they come from..so so much for thinking they belong to McAfee.

they only thing i could pull was the config settings:

    Jgcfgp83,22]4-03-0221"3186;815
    QTP"CFF8JGCVJGP
    QTP"RPMV83~;41~2~~6~~
    QCTG"RPMV386
    QCTG"NMA38A8^Fmawoglvq"clf"Qgvvkleq^Qknn{"@clclc^O{"Fmawoglvq^vpgqqgpoaic{^hwqv]vjg]ngvvgp]h^qjcpgf^
    QCTG"KLVT812

    AIG[[email protected];[email protected]:200F204::F7D507D21D
    810731

    opened in notepad, natch.

    as far as version:

    File version: 0.9.0.92
every thing else is blanck cept for
    orginal file name: mon.bin
    and
    product name: SysMgmt

    hope this sheads some light

Well what I would do then is ctrl-alt-del and terminate the process wshield.exe

Find it again and rename it wshield.bak

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wshield.exe

Run Hijackthis and "fix" the registry entry. It can be restored from config > backups in HijackThis if necessary.

Reboot and see if anything in McAfee or anything else breaks. If not you can delete the renamed file at your leisure.

Have no idea what you are looking at with "config settings"....

    houston....we have a wedgie..

ok...im hosed. when i ctrl-alt-delete i dont get my wonderful muti-tabbed task box. all i get is this nasty, generic box that lists programs running, which is just the programs visible in my taskbar. I have found that if i want to find a list of processes running i have to run the option out of Spybot. But i don't honestly believe it 'kills' the process when i tell it too.

can the lack of Cool C-A-D be caused by this possibly sinister wshield?

Nah, you're fine. Just double click the outer edge of the Task Manager window and the tabs will MAGICALLY appear! :)

I was unable to rename it to .bak...but was able to end it's process and wip it out with HT. This message is being posted before the reboot.

incidently, it does try to access the net ( i payed closer attention to my firewall.) and after i deny it access it just hangs out in the background doing nothing....all zeros in the process list. it only gets number, i would presume, once it has access.....

if this causes weird problems i will natch just bring it back from the back-up....but i just wish i knoew what it was.

a bbs friend told me he found s blerb about it relating to win3.1 so he thinks it's benign. i dunno....*crosses fingers*

You will probably need to boot up in Safe Mode to rename it. Did you try it that way?

HT only removes the registry startup ofcourse; if it stays removed on reboot, then you can probably rename it. But if it returns you have to do the whole process in Safe Mode.

ok, so i used the HT and just for giggles i ran Stinger in safe mode. all clean and dandy.

i dont notice any chenges in McAfee...but then again i wouldn't expect changes instantly...im going to run the system with the removed .exe stored in the HT way-back-machine.

sadly...i dont know -how- to cahnge the file name. I thought it was going to be easily done...but it's not as i expected it. if it were the config..i could just open it up...and then save it as someting else...but this is an appication and my brain is tiny.
