Next week i will be placing an order for a new computer, through the website NCIX.com - Canada's Premier Computer Store - Great Technology, Service and Selection. (I am from Canada).

Now, i have enough money to be flexible, and don't need to lay out a strict budget.
At the same time, i want to build the CHEAPEST POSSIBLE COMPUTER that will run all current and in-development games at or near the highest possible settings.

I'm thinking DX11 support, windows 7, probably a quad core processor, but possibly 6core.

Please throw me some suggestions, as this impending order is set in stone. I NEED a new computer and the money is available now, finally, after 4 years.

My rough budget-outline is probably 1000 dollars. FLexable, but dont kill it.

The budget must include all computer hardware, as well as a keyboard and mouse. I also need to purchase windows 7. As much of a future-proof system as possible.

    I Already have a monitor.

I priced out these at the Canadian Newegg site, much easier to find parts then at NCIX.com but if you need to use that site then you should be able to match the parts.

    CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition @ $133.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103644

    Cooler: ZALMAN CNPS7000C-AlCu 2 @ $19.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118048

    Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-880GM-USB3 AM3 @ $94.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128440

    RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 @ $111.49: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231193

    Video Card: HIS H577FM1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB @ $156.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161317

    Hard Drive: HITACHI Deskstar HD31000 IDK/7K @ $76.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145287

    DVD: Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+R @ $21.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118030

    Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 @ $69.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119077

    Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W @ $70.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341016

    O/S: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit @ $108.99: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754

Keyboard & Mouse: Microsoft Wireless Ergonomic Wireless Optical Desktop 3000 @ $37.49: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826105035

Thats $903.89 without taxes or shipping or speakers. (That's $1021.39 after taxes, shipping might be around $50 - $1021.39 final price)

So areas that could be improved on are the video card, you could go to a Radeon 58xx or 59xx series card. You could go up to 6 or 8GB's of RAM. You could also get a faster processor; there's only two 6 core CPU's currently available from AMD, neither one is terribly better then the quad cores for current stuff. The power supply could also be upgraded to a higher end and higher wattage unit.

I have no idea what SC2 and D3 are- I assume Starcraft 2, D3 eludes me. But as far as Bad Company 2 goes, it should run ok. You will not get max performance- I run a pair of 5870s on an i7 920, and I get about 150 FPS or so on medium. although High adds very little. In terms of will it play at a good enough level to enjoy it, Triple6 has given you a great setup.

I saw the CPU does not come with a cooler. Depending on what you want, allow (I guess) 30-100 dollars for that, maybe more. I also suggest looking at canadian tiger direct, they may be a bit cheaper overall, especially with shiping. I found an XFX 5770

    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5599121&Sku=P450-5772

For what I think is a lower price, after conversion.

As a by the way, if you want to ask about a game, put the full title. Saves a lot of hassle :)

Here is my suggestion a little over budget but you will receive $20 mail and rebate from the power supply and $10 mail and rebate from the case bring your total to $1272.60 before shipping and tax. I did not include a CD/DVD drive on this list because I assume you already have one but if you do not add $20-30 onto the total.

Thanks for all the suggestions, the games i listed are starcraft 2 and diablo 3, however i will probably play a wide variety of games.

I'm getting real excited for this pc, been playing with my amd 64 3400+, x800xt video card, and 2 gigs of ddr2 ram for like 4 years...

I haven't even been able to buy a new game in over a year.

Thank god for tax returns! this one is going to be about 2800 bucks, but i will be spending about 1k on a tv, and dont want to spend everything left on this computer. thinking no more than 1300 after shipping and taxes.

There is quite a difference in performance between intel and amd quad core processors.

You should take a look @ review below.

    http://www.techspot.com/review/195-mainstream-quadcore-cpu-performance/page3.html

It is really hard to get a good gaming pc that will run "in-development games at or near the highest possible settings" for $1000. So you should be prepared to pay a little extra especially on the GPU (see the charts comparing the 5850 versus 5770) on resolutions 1920x1200 or above with resolution details set high .

A game that already stresses the current boundaries battleforge, the 5770 drops below the important 30fps rate @ both the 1920x1200 and 1680x1080 resolutions.

I also had to make a change I just realized that the "i7 memory kit" is not compatable with the i7 cpu bundle. The motherboard memory controller is dual channel not triple channel. I also added a dvd writer for $29.89

So the total is $1,281.53 plus 64.08 GST is $1345.61 minus 30 mail in rebates is 1315.61 plus shipping $5.99 because of a Ground Shipping Promo.

So grand total is 1321.6 with shipping and tax (excluding shipping insurance and pst, ncix does not charge pst to any other provinces exempt BC, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are charged 13% HST).

Alright well, i guess i could spend MAYBE 1500 after taxes and shipping, if you fully convince me it's worth the additional cost :p

i'm big on games when they play on high settings well, but i totally lose enthusiasm when i feel my pc performs under-par... I am not sure why, but studders or fps drops completely ruin games for me... i mean i can handle occasional ones, but not actually laggy gameplay.

The problem is i am stuck with ncix, they DO have price-matching though.

Because my friend is purchasing the item for me, as i've never had the balls to apply for a credit card, out of fear i'd abuse it! living without credit, other than for necessary things such as a vehicle and house.

The ncix build is a better choice as the Intel Core i7 860 is better processor than the AMD Phenom II X4 965.

The motherboard also supports USB 3.0 and SATA3 that are two new technologies. The hard drive is sata3 so you will notice some performance increases as well.

The system quoted is 1321.60 so that is $21 above your original 1300 purchase price, if you have more money to spend you could invest in better CPU cooler such as the H50 if you plan to overclock or add another Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB memory kit.

I would also strongly recommend getting NCIX to build your system for $50. That will add a 1year warranty to all parts, they will pre-install the OS and if you are new to building computers save you the trouble of building the computer yourself.
