    Ok, here's the dealy-o.

I've recently been having "trouble" with my computer. You see if I try to run a game -such as Raven Shield, or XIII -My computer lets me have a few minutes of gaming bliss, then rudely crashes to desktop, usually sighting a general protection fault.

"Ah!" I hear you say,"Those games both use the Unreal engine, that must be where the problem lies". But I say "NAY!" for UT2k3 runs peachy-keen, and the problem also extends to other non-UT engine games, such as Tron 2, Couter-Strike, and Earth and Beyond (Which actually causes my box to die and reset).

I thought it could've been dodgy RAM, but (A) this has only started happening in the last week or so, (B) I can render very large, CPU/RAM hogging animations in Lightwave for 6hrs without a hitch, and (C) I swapped the Ram with a friends and the problem still persisted.

I've reinstalled my video drivers and directX 9.0 incase there was a problem there, but IT'S STILL HAPPENING!!! ARGH! HELP!!!

Have you looked into overheating, on either the CPU or the video card? Clean out all the dust in the case, make sure all the fans are working, and try playing with the side of the case off.

Can you think of what you may have changed/installed right before the trouble began?

I would still pull the case and have a desk fan blowing into it to absolutely rule out overheating.

only thing that I can think of is that I installed a beta of Halo(since removed)...other than that nothing...btw...may have to reappraise my stance on the possibility of my V.Card...it does get a little warm, but I dont THINK its excessive.

When was the last time you defragged, cleaned the registry, ran an anti-virus or checked for spyware? If you can run Lightwave for hours on end, then I really wouldn't think it was an overheating thing ( then again wouldn't completely rule it out either ).

When you "reinstalled" the video drivers, did you completely remove the old ones first? Im grasping here man. Gonna keep on researching this tho. As it has me intrigued now.

Actually...Now that I'm looking in a paranoid fashion...the VIA KT400 chipset is quite warm...as in touching it for more that a few second gets unpleasant...

Last time I ran a virus check? about 20 minutes ago...I have had trouble on that front too (see my post in the security section), I've used about 5 different scanners and they all tell me Im clean now, but the problem persists.

Suesman - the fact I can render in Lightwave like that is what lead me to disregard the overheating idea, that and the fact that I ripped out the card and whacked in my friends GeForce4 ti and the bloody thing still CCD'd!!!

OK, I've got a desktop Fan blowing nice cool air straight into the case, and it looked like that might have been the problem cos Tron 2 was running fine for ages...but then it crashed causing my computer to reset. :(

Here's a copy of the Error code in case it means anything to someone:

    BCCode : 10000050 BCP1 : D03E3FED BCP2 : 00000001 BCP3 : E2FA62B6
    BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 256_1

btw...I'm really grateful for all your help so far. :D
