I am reinstalling windows xp pro. It goes through setup and then restarts. If I leave my cd in there it starts setup all over again. If I remove the cd when it restarts I get a disc read error. What is going on here? Thanks in advance.

Debbie:

When you boot from the XP Pro CD and the Press any key to boot from CD prompt appears, you press a key that first time only and not when it appears again during the 2 restarts that take place during the install process. Keep your hands off the keyboard and the prompt will disappear in a few seconds.

Do not remove the XP CD from its drive until the install process is completely done.

I'm assuming that XP Pro was already installed in your computer and that you're reinstalling it again for some reason.

If that's the case, did you delete all current partitions, then create a new C partition and allocate the entire hard drive space for it, then format the hard drive in the NTFS file system, then start the install process of XP Pro?

I'm also assuming that you're using an actual XP Pro CD and not a recovery/restore CD?

Once the 'Windows Setup' phase of the installation (the blue text-based screens that has the service agreement, hard drive and directory/partition choices of where the OS is to be installed, the initial copying of system files, etc) finishes and reboots, do you follow the "Press any key to boot from CD" screen prompt? If you are, that is most likely the reason you are stuck in the loop. There is a second 'GUI' phase of the installation process that needs to happen, which will begin if you just ignore that screen prompt and wait.

As I previously said, press a key only when that prompt appears the first time when you boot from the XP CD. Keep your hands off the keyboard when it appears again during restarts.
