    Hi,

You can ping name or IP? Mapped drives was connected by name or by IP?.
If by name, what means what names are not resolved.
Ensure what Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled on each workstation (local area connection, TCP/IP properties)
Ensure what in your firewall advanced settings, Outbound rules Netbios not denied. Ensure what you have "home network, or "Work network" profiles set via Network and Sharing center on windows 7 machine.

Thanks xalerik, i acn ping via ip addresses and mapped drive via ip address as well.
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled, even switched off firewall. every other computer can access everything else including the shared folders, only this laptop, funny thing is it used to connect. i must be missing something that changed. laptop was infected by malware, user downloaded fake antivirus software that i removed. do yu think that malware might be the cause, disabled something. cant seem to wrap my head around this problem

Mostly malware is the root cause of such kind of problems if everything is done correctly. Disabling firewall not good idea and it will not help you in Windows 7. You should enable firewall and look in inbound/outbound rules. Also check profile for network. Trick to disable firewall and have all communication opened works only "before windows 7/vista" as i notised.
Which error you receiving then trying to open share via:
    Start > run
    \\servername\sharename
    \\ipaddress\sharename

I agree with xalerik that the malware likely left some corruption behind. Do not know what, or how to trouble shoot it.
