My USB mouse isn't being recognized by Vista (the light goes on but no matter what port I plug it in, it fails to work), so I'm forced to use the touchpad, which I absolutely hate for a myriad of reasons. I'm trying to disable the feature where tapping the touchpad is the equivalent of a left click on a mouse. So far, while typing this message, my thumb has accidentally hit the touchpad three times and really messed my paragraph up. I can't find the touchpad settings anywhere, and this is REALLY starting to piss me off.

I'm using an HP Pavilion dv2700 with Vista x64 Home Premium SP1.

Got a mouse for my daughter's Compaq ( HP by another name) notebook because I have clumsy fingers. Had similar problem. Think I had to plug the mouse in before startup to get the the computer to recognize it had new hardware.

Don't know why you are getting the regular Mouse Properties screen. You might try updating your drivers for the touchpad to see if that might change the Mouse Properties screen. Only other thing I can think of is to uninstall/reinstall the touchpad.

Driver was already updated and it still doesn't work. Is it time to ditch this crappy mouse?

You might also want to check your USB Mouse settings in your bios if you're using an onboard USB controller

Sounds rather simple, but many people overlook it... Have you checked the batteries in the mouse? We have one cordless mouse that the batteries last a long time. The one with a diifferent computer has to be replaced every couple of weeks or so. Also with the one on our lap top we use a ps2/usb adapter to plug the usb mouse in.

Mine isn't wireless. I've had a couple where the USB sensor died on me from being bent up sitting on my knee. D: I know this isn't the case with this one since the light is staying on.

When you go into devce manager, does it indicate the mouse there? You could still use the adapter with the wired mouse...
We have found when using the lappy on our laps, we use a cheap 'lap top desk' (plastic tray with styrofoam filled base) helps keep cables straight and also is cooler on the lap.

Agh, I'm dumb. I thought that the ALPS driver update was for the USB mouse. It was the same driver as before but apparently there was some screwup because now the touchpad settings are working properly. Thanks!

It acknowledges its presence but it's labeled "Unknown Device".
