for some time ive been trying to download and update several new anti virus programs because my free trial ended. but when i install the anti-virus and try to update it, it fail all the time. what i noticed from all those failures is the proxy. for some reason it says

Connection failed while downloading via the system proxy the file http://dl3.avgate.net/upd/idx/master.idx.
17.03.2009 19:23:06 - Switching to next update server
17.03.2009 19:23:06 - Connection failed while downloading via the system proxy the file http://dl9.freeav.net/upd/idx/master.idx.
17.03.2009 19:23:06 - Switching to next update server

i think it has something to do with my brothers wireless internet, or the router.

My brothers computer is pretty messed up with virus right now. also he doesnt have any password lock on the wireless line either.

ill tell you anything that is needed in order to fix my computer please help me.

AVG has, during the past 4 months had intermittent problems with updates.

You might want to manually download the update and update it through the AVG interface.

Which version of Windows; which type [ pro, ultimate, etc ]; which service pack?

Be sure you have completely uninstalled all other AV programs; looked for remover / uninstall utilities at the AV vendors' websites.

Which AV programs have you had installed; brand, version, version #, such as Norton Internet Sec 2008 Premium; as an example, not a recommendation.

Which version of AVG is currently installed?

I switched from AVG Free to AVG non free because the free no longer protects vs rootkits.

    See: http://www.avg.com/support
    A # of AVG's FAQ's, 1712, for example.

i cannot tell which service pack im using but i do update every time an update my computer when ever they tell me to.

currently i just installed this anti virus called Avira, this is the free version of it which i dont think its a trial, but i havent been able to update it at all so the the first version is the version i have.

i did not have this problem when i had nortron..... i guess i should have just extended the subscription... but in any case i hope these info can help alittle bit

I apologize for not welcoming you to Tech Guy Forum.

2ndly, I mis understood. I thought you were using AVG Free.

I have no knowledge of Avira. I am confident that another TGF member will try to assist you.

    Sincerely,
